From Hoodie Sleeves to Beanies: The Art of Reconstruction

ONE HOODIE. TWO NEW IDENTITIES.

What happens when a garment is no longer treated as a finished product?

At ROUGH., we believe that clothing doesn’t necessarily reach its final form when production ends.

Sometimes, the most interesting part of the design process begins when something is taken apart.

A hoodie becomes sleeveless.

The removed sleeves become beanies.

One original garment. Two entirely new identities.

This is our approach to reconstruction.

Not simply destroying something to create an aesthetic, but questioning what a garment can become when its original purpose is no longer fixed.

Deconstruction Is Only the Beginning.

Deconstruction is often associated with unfinished seams, raw edges, exposed construction and distressed fabrics.

But for us, it goes further.

It’s about challenging the idea that a garment should only exist in the form it was originally designed.

A hoodie is designed with sleeves.

Remove them, and its proportions change.

The silhouette becomes different.

The relationship between the garment and the body changes.

What remains is no longer simply the hoodie we started with.

It becomes something new.

But what happens to the sleeves?

That’s where the second part of the process begins.

From Hoodie Sleeves to Beanies.

Instead of discarding the removed sleeves, we decided to explore their potential.

The fabric already exists.

The material already has a history.

And its original construction offers possibilities for something entirely different.

By repurposing the sleeves, we transform them into beanies.

What was once part of a hoodie becomes an independent accessory.

The process is an example of clothing upcycling, where existing garments and materials are reimagined rather than immediately discarded.

The result is the ROUGH. SWEAT BEANIE RAW CUT.

A piece that carries the identity of its original material while serving an entirely new purpose.

The raw-cut aesthetic remains an essential part of its character.

Nothing about the design attempts to disguise where it came from.

Instead, the transformation becomes part of its story.

One Hoodie. Two Different Pieces.

The concept is simple.

One hoodie becomes the starting point for two separate creations.

01. THE SLEEVELESS HOODIE

The original hoodie is reconstructed by removing its sleeves.

Its silhouette changes.

The exposed arm openings introduce a raw, unfinished appearance.

The familiar shape of a hoodie is transformed into something more unconventional.

02. THE RECONSTRUCTED BEANIE

The removed sleeves are given another purpose.

Rather than becoming discarded fabric, they are repurposed into beanies.

The original material is preserved and reinterpreted through a different design.

Two pieces.

Two functions.

One original garment.

Why Upcycling Matters in Fashion.

The fashion industry has traditionally operated around a straightforward principle.

Produce.

Consume.

Replace.

But reconstruction introduces another possibility.

What if an existing garment could become the foundation for something else?

What if the material we already have could be used differently?

Upcycling in fashion is not necessarily about creating something completely new from scratch.

Sometimes, it is about recognizing the potential in something that already exists.

At ROUGH., this approach allows us to experiment with silhouettes, materials and construction while making use of fabric that would otherwise be removed from the original garment.

The objective is not to claim that fashion can exist without waste.

It is to explore how thoughtful design decisions can give existing materials another purpose.

The Beauty of Raw Construction.

A perfectly finished garment often hides the process behind its creation.

Seams are concealed.

Edges are refined.

Imperfections are removed.

Reconstruction challenges that expectation.

Raw edges become visible.

The original construction becomes part of the design.

Irregularities are no longer necessarily considered flaws.

They become characteristics.

Our Sweat Beanie Raw Cut follows this philosophy.

Its identity comes from the transformation of an existing garment rather than the pursuit of a perfectly conventional finish.

The result is something that feels familiar and unfamiliar at the same time.

Is Upcycled Clothing the Future of Fashion?

Fashion will always evolve.

New silhouettes, materials and technologies will continue to influence how clothing is designed.

But innovation does not always require entirely new materials.

Sometimes, it begins by reconsidering what already exists.

A sleeve does not have to remain a sleeve.

A hoodie does not have to remain a hoodie.

And a finished garment does not necessarily represent the end of the creative process.

For us, reconstruction is an ongoing exploration of these possibilities.

It allows us to approach clothing as something that can evolve beyond its original identity.

Nothing Ends Where It Begins.

Every garment starts with an idea.

But that idea doesn’t have to remain unchanged.

A hoodie becomes sleeveless.

Its sleeves become beanies.

The original construction disappears, but the material continues to exist in another form.

What was once a single garment becomes two separate pieces.

And what could have been discarded becomes part of another design.
